Bus Rapid System in Cebu

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama wants to replicate at the South Road Properties (SRP) some of the practices in the operation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Ahmedabad, India.

Rama said he discussed the proposed BRT system in the city in a meeting Thursday with representatives of the National Economic and Development Agency, Asian Development Bank-Cities Development Initiative for Asia (ADB-CDIA) and the Department of Transportation and Communication.

Rama said the BRT system in Ahmedabad has a centralized control system and employs computers that monitor intersections, among others.

Ahmedabad’s BRT system also runs especially designed buses with wide doors on both sides and it features electronic fare collection and user information system.

When Rama flew to India for a technical study mission together with the ADB-CDIA and the city’s BRT steering committee last month, he looked into the way it operates, its ticketing process and the kind of bus it uses.

The Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of the United States has described the BRT system in Ahmedabad as “the best practice of BRT in South Asia.”

In India, Ahmedabad is said to be the first city to have adopted a BRT system.

Once in place, Rama believes that the BRT system will change the landscape of Cebu City, in a good way.
