Earthquakes Hit Mindanao Island, Philippines

Residents of three cities in Mindanao were rattled by a series of mild earthquakes of tectonic origin early Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

However, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Northeastern and Southern Mindanao regions reported no injuries or damages caused by these tremors.

According to Phivolcs, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake occurred at 4:11 a.m. Tuesday in Butuan City of Northeastern Mindanao region.

The epicenter of the quake was traced at 43 kilometers northeast of Butuan City.

At 3:09 a.m. also Tuesday, a 4.3 magnitude tremor rocked Mati City. It was recorded 179 kilometers southeast of that southern-tip city in Davao Oriental province in Southern Mindanao region.

Earlier at 1:11 a.m. of the same day, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake rattled residents in General Santos City, also in Southern Mindanao region, Phivolcs said.
