Humanitarian Action Plan in Mindanao, Philippines

The United Nations (UN) is set to revise its humanitarian action plan in Mindanao in six week’s time to reflect the evolving needs in the region. amid the destruction brought by tropical storm “Sendong.”

In a statement issued on Thursday, the UN said the emergency revision of the action plan aims to “provide clean water for drinking and bathing, food, emergency shelter, and essential household items to 471,000 worst-affected people in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities for three months.”

Shelter requirements for those whose houses have been destroyed or those who will be unable to return to their neighborhoods categorized as hazardous and high risk areas will likely feature in the revision. Livelihood support to help people rebuild their lives will also be key,” the UN said.

The agency is also appealing for million from stakeholders for the immediate needs of the flash flood victims.

Acting UN resident and humanitarian coordinator Soe Nyunt-U just came from a two-day visit to the two cities, which he described the scale of destruction “as if the cities were hit by an inland tsunami.”

“Entire areas were completely flattened; only a few sturdy buildings remain standing, and these had sustained a lot of damage. Debris from houses, buildings and other structures that had been destroyed by the storm was all swept out to the sea, leaving huge areas devoid of all traces of habitation,” he said.

The government has already recorded 1,060 dead or missing. Evacuation centers are already teeming with families displaced from their homes.
