Construction workers hired by the city government here will earn wages P150 higher than their current fees.

Upon the recommendation of City Councilor Jason R. Gonzales, the city government decided to increase the daily wage rate of construction workers, applicable in all its infrastructure projects.

Gonzales, who chairs the committee on good government and public accountability, authored a resolution that adopted the proposal of Engr. Karl C. Quimsing, acting chief of the City Engineer’s Office (CEO).

Gonzales noted that the existing labor rate being implemented is way below the minimum wage rate set by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) as well as those of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

He said the CEO proposed a revised daily wage rate for construction foreman to P450 from P300, skilled laborer to P330 from P230, and unskilled laborer to P235 from P160.

Gonzales made consultations with presidents of three architecture groups and a reputable contractor regarding the prevailing labor rates being used by their organizations.

“It was revealed that CEO proposed schedule is within acceptable range of current practice in the private sector. The results of consultations have been discussed with the heads of the committees on appropriation, labor and rules,” Gonzales explained.
