Philippines Gambling on Wake Restricted to 5 Days

Laoag City Mayor Michael Fariñas has limited to only five days the holding of gambling games during the wake for a dead kin in this provincial capital.

Farinas issued the directive after receiving reports that operators of illegal gambling abuse the Ilocano culture and tradition by allowing the playing of gambling games during such wake.

Gambling games are usually held by Filipino families to raise funds that would cover part of expenses of the surviving kin.

The games include cards and mahjong, played with a set of 136 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols.

Farinas said that even if gaming is an Ilocano tradition when there is a dead person, this should be limited as this might cause household problems.
