A fountain in honor of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal will be unveiled on Dec. 30 at the historic Rizal Park in Manilla.
This was announced Thursday by National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) publications chief Peter Uckung at Thursday’s edition of Talking Points aired live over People’s Television Network (PTV4) and DZRB Radyo ng Bayan with the help of Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and NBN-4.
Uckung said NCHP historical fountain at the Rizal Park on December 30 is part of the Rizal Day celebration. He said the fountain came from Europe and said to have been frequented by national hero Jose Rizal when he was there.
“It is a tangible proof that there is a Rizal who lived, and this is where he drank,” Uckung said.
He said this could be a new “sacred place” that the youth can visit, so that the Rizal Park will not just be the place where Rizal was killed.
This event is one of activities lined up for the Rizal day celebration on December 30 in Rizal Park which President Noynoy Aquino will grace. There will also be activities in Dapitan where Rizal was exiled and in Calamba, Laguna where he was born.
Uckung also said NHCP continuous to publish books and other reading materials such as magazines, to impart knowledge and to constantly remind the youth of the events in Philippine history.
He said the books which NHCP publishes are not for profit but for service. Some of the books they publish are Rizal’s Life and Works, Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, Doctrina Christiana, etc.
Uckung said they also have a history museum at T.M. Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila where relics and pictures of important people who played an important part in the Philippine history are also exhibited.
In a related development, NHCP is already coordinating with telecommunication companies to promote historical awareness among Filipinos, especially the youth.
Uckung said they are getting ready with a memorandum of agreement with major telecommunication companies to further their campaign. Under this agreement, the telecommunication companies will send historical facts via short message service (sms) to its subscribers.
