An eight-year-old boy drowned Tuesday afternoon in Barangay Candanay, Siquijor, a fourth class town in nearby Siquijor province, after he was pinned underneath a concrete fence that buckled under pressure from floodwaters brought about by tropical storm Juaning.
The victim was identified as Chese Rey Yuag Maghanoy, a Grade III pupil of the Candanay Elementary School and son of Cherly, 45, and Loreto, 48, residents of Candanay.
Initial reports showed that the boy’s Class Adviser, Marites Basong, had announced the suspension of her class on Tuesday morning after heavy rains caused flooding at the school grounds.
While other classes went on, Basong warned her pupils not to return to school if the flooding got worse.
Chese Rey Maghanoy, who lived nearby, apparently went back to the school premises and was reportedly playing with a classmate when the concrete fence collapsed around 3 p.m. Tuesday, said Renan Ansing of the Siquijor Mirror.
