The City Agriculture Office (CAO) is encouraging farmers to use organic fertilizers that will help save from the skyrocketing prices of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides in the market today.

Ferdinand Viernes, city agricultural technician, said farmers can use fermented plant juice as fertilizer for palay and vegetables.

The fermented plant juice is made out of indigenous materials like molasses juice and chopped banana trunks that is mixed and fermented for a week.

Viernes said the banana trunk is rich in oxin that induces growth hormones of plants and maintains the greenness of plants needed for photosynthesis.

The fermented plant juice is mixed with water and sprayed to plants to serve as fertilizers.

Viernes said aside from banana trunks, camote and kangkong tops, egg shells, animal bones and sweet fruits can also be made organic fertilizers.
