Thirty-nine women from the municipality of Anilao will receive a P780,000 reward from President Benigno Simeon Aquino III during his visit here Friday.
“We call this as a `reward’ for them because they have successfully implemented the Self-Employment Assistance-Kaunlaran (SEA-K) Level I. This is an incentive for them,” said Joel P. Galicia, assistant regional director of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The women are members of Anilao SEA Kabayan, Incorporated, a merger of two SEA-K associations namely, Pantalan SKA and MPL SKA. Pantalan has 20 members while MPL has 19 members.
Their members are engaged in various income generating projects such as food vending, sari-sari store, managing carinderia and vegetable production. After two years, they have fully paid their loans and are currently operating lending activities out of the savings they have generated.
“They have demonstrated capability to manage a community-based credit assistance program. This is why DSWD is releasing to them a bigger amount under SEA-K level II or SEA-Kabayan,” said Galicia.
The SEA-K is the national government’s micro-finance strategy for job generation and investment in human capital. The program provides seed capital at no interest and it is payable in two years for economically active poor to develop their socio-economic skills. SEA-K helps establish community-based, self-managed credit facilities in the municipalities.
